The sweet sugar product, molasses, is essential for the black colour of the liquorice, and it also has dark flavours that enhance the intense liquorice flavour.
The Greek name for liquorice is 'Glycyrrhiza glabra', which means 'the sweet root'. This name is no understatement because in its natural state the liquorice root is 30-50 times sweeter than plain sugar. We gather our fine liquorice roots from Italy, Afghanistan and the Middle East.
Our liquorice is cooked with rice flour and is gluten-free. The rice flour is completely taste neutral.
